Installation of a Height Safety/Rope Access Abseil System.

RIGCOM Access secured the 3 year contract with University of Sydney late last year and the first update that was required was for the install of a Height Safety/Abseil system on top of one of the University’s buildings.

With the required solution there were several possible options for the client. The first is we could have installed all anchor points. The issue with that solution is that some of the areas were close to being 2m from the edge. Because of this the required positioning of the Height Safety anchors would have had to be within reaching distance of each other. Which really would be impractical when moving around the roof top.

Another issue with just using anchor points is the structure we were installing onto was vertical concrete. And Anchor points can’t be in direct pull when used for Rope Access/Fall Protection.

The second option was the use of a Capital Safety Uni8 Height Safety cable system, installed directly onto the wall and anchor points into the steelwork. The only issue with this was that cable systems are not designed to be used for Rope Access.

The only real solution that met the required criteria of the client was to install the Capital Safety Unirail product. This Height Safety system was installed directly onto the vertical wall. Although in direct pull, due to the multiple anchor points the loads are engineered to be spread and therefore allow the system to be installed in this way. The Capital Safety Unirail product is designed to be installed in different orientations. Allowing for a greater range of installation situations. The system can either be installed for fall protection and or Abseil Use.

Along with the installation of the Height Safety/Abseil rail system, supporting Anchor points were installed into the structural steelwork and diversion anchors were installed on the building corners. Capital Safety Spirotech anchor were used for this application.

Environmental Monitoring Tower Inspections on a Mine Site

Detail Tower Inspections carried out for preventative maintenance.

RIGCOM Access were engaged by a environmental monitoring company to provide a yearly detailed report to one of their 60m Tower structures located on a mine site near Mudgee. We were able to deploy a team of Riggers to carry out these works.

As part of the Tower Inspections, RIGCOM Access were asked to carry out:

Guide-wire inspection and tensioning. This helped ensuring that there is the correct tension to the supporting wires.
Replacement of weather station components at the top of the mast. Continued updates to monitoring technology for the mine.
Inspection and torque testing of the structural steelwork, ensuring the structure remains structurally sound.
Taking magnetic bearings of tower faces to ensure correct alignments.
As part of the works, the certification of the Capital Safety Ladsaf fall protection was also carried out.
Checking rigging to Australian Standards.
Safety inspection of surrounding area, to provide a site safety package detailing access to the mast with trip hazards, overhead power-lines and other issues identified.

Once the Tower Inspections were completed a detailed report with our findings was produced with images of the structure and any issues we came across and presented to our client as part of the scope of works.

Rope Access – Saves Time and Money

In a rush to prepare for the Ashes, we were engaged by a contractor working for the SCSGT to help upgrade the telecommunication antennas around the SCG.

Because of the multiple locations, where the new antenna’s were to be installed, scaffolding would not have been practicable due to the tight timeframes. It would have also cost substantial amounts of money. The use of Elevated Work Platforms were also out, due to the need to protect the SCG outfield after works that had just been carried out.

The solution was to use Rope Access technicians to ascend ropes, which had been dropped down in the required location for the antenna’s. The install times were dramatically reduced. Not only saving the client time, more than 1 week of their scheduled installation time, but also over $15000 in just EWP costs.

Rope Access not only brings a practical solution to accessing difficult to reach areas, but also a financial solution, reducing costs for clients. This is a clear example of the benefits over traditional access methods.

Rope Access Stadium Roof Inspections.

Utilising Rope Access to inspect the underside of a Stadium Roof

The Allianz Stadium in Sydney is one of the landmarks for public sports enthusiasts. To keep the maintenance up on such a huge stadium, it becomes necessary to keep track of very bit of square footage exposed to the elements in the stadium, and that includes the roof, and underneath the Ceiling. Inspections and maintenance works must be carried out on a regular basis, and they must be done at a low cost, or the inspections alone would cut into the revenues of the stadiums trust. Since both inspections and basic repairs must be done on a regular basis, it would be both costly and inefficient to attempt to use scaffolding under such conditions.

We were approached by Sydney Cricket And Sports Ground Trust to complete thorough inspections and repairs to the underside of the stadiums ceiling, and this requires innovative access solutions. For this task we used our Rope Access services to undertake the works, and we were able to thoroughly complete our client’s request.

Now, performing such a job requires a high level of rescue procedures put into practice for our team, along with a highly technical skill set and knowledge of Rope Access itself. For this, we used IRATA 3 level technicians. Industrial Rope Access Trade Association (IRATA) technicians must have a working knowledge of Rope Access, and Level 3 IRATA technicians must be very adept, indeed, to perform in dangerous situations which require specialized skills.

We were able to use our highly trained technicians to safely and effectively access the underside of the stadium’s ceiling by using Rope Access. This saves both cost and time, which in turn benefitted our client. As you can see from the photos, accessing and repairing the underside of a stadium ceiling requires an advanced level of skill with the Rope Access system, and this is what we were able to provide to our client.

Rope Access NDT Bridge inspections

Rope Access NDT Heritage bridge inspections.

The Hawthorne Bridge, crossing the Yarra River east of Melbourne, was built with a wrought iron truss design in 1861. It is considered to be one of the oldest metal bridges in Australia, and even time can wreak havoc upon strong metal after many years have passed. The bridge needed to be evaluated.

Our client requested that we survey this bridge to establish the integrity of the structure. A thorough and complete evaluation needed to be made, and we were therefore asked to carry out Non Destructive Testing (NDT), including Magnetic Particle Inspection (MPI), which is an NDT method for testing surface and subsurface issues in certain materials which include iron, nickel, and cobalt. Ferroelectric materials and their alloys are often inspected using MPI methods.

Since we specialize in providing access to hard to reach areas, this job was especially appropriate for us. We were able to use Rope Access to access the entire bridge, including areas which are normally difficult to access or to get near or inside of, especially over the water. Through Non Destructive Testing methods, we were able to identify any issues and we presented our findings in our report to our client.

Hawthorne Bridge is listed on the Victorian Heritage Register, and is a valuable asset to the Australian people. Melbourne was changed by the addition to the area of a useful bridge, and the history of the loss and replacement of the Hawthorne Bridge parts was just as important to the local area as the bridge itself later came to be after constructed.
