Our client, an air conditioning company initially approached us with an interesting problem. A 5 level building with a central service area needed to be inspected for one of their clients. They were approached to inspect and possibly repair the ventilation shafts, and these were mainly within the confined service area.

The confined service area was not accessible, except from the roof or from one of the resident windows. To inspect and repair these ventilation shafts, scaffolding would have been costly and time consuming, not to mention extremely difficult to build within the somewhat inaccessible, confined space.

Our company was approached because we specialize in accessibility and inspection solutions, and we were able to do the entire inspection with our Rope Access methods. Rope Access gave us the flexibility to access the enclosed space from the roof, and allowed us to move around freely to inspect the ventilation shafts. This would not have been as quick or as flexible with any other method.

Through using our Rope Access, we were able to determine that the ventilation shafts were very corroded, some were eroded all the way through, there was plenty of water damage, and pigeons were even nesting inside the vents. As you see from the photos, the ventilation shafts in this hard to access closed space were unusable.

We then provided a detailed report with our findings, which also included measurements, photos, and the details of the issues found. We recommended a complete removal of the old ventilation ducts and installment of new ones. The old vents were beyond repair, and in order for the residents to have clean air or the building to have working ventilation shafts, completely new ducts were required, since the old ones were past the point of repair.

Rope Access NDT Inspections

Using Rope Access, Railcorp, wanted us to inspect their communication towers and to deliver a general report on the condition of the towers, their structural integrity, and the equipment installed. This general report would include carrying out Non Destructive Testing (NDT) inspections, including inspecting the thickness of the steel work and the thickness of the protective coatings.

We performed the inspections utilising Rope Access methods, which are shown in the pictures. Using Rope Access techniques, as opposed to normal tower climbing techniques, allows for permanent attachment to the structure, while enabling rapid moment up and down. It in turn enables us to increase the safety for the climbers and reduce time required for the inspections. Through using rope access, we were able to reduce our cost and, therefore, reduce the cost to the client.

We found general wear to the structure and breakdown of protective coatings. When the protective coating breaks down, it allows surface rust to degrade the structure further, and some of this was also found.

Through NDT inspections, we were able to examine the structure effectively while avoiding damaging the structure or altering it in any permanent way. This is the reason why many companies prefer NDT inspections. It reduces the wear and tear from more invasive inspections.

We provided our client with a detailed report on our findings, and included measurements and photos in our report. By receiving information like this on a regular basis, a company can monitor its holdings and create structural degradation reports over time with which they can make better informed decisions concerning maintenance and repair.

Petzl statement on a special use of the Petzl Shunt

Context:

Since 1999 Petzl has provided specific information regarding the special use of the Petzl SHUNT as a back-up device of  industrial rope access. Petzl required that users must have received and mastered IRATA (Industrial Rope Access Trade Association) training or similar and must also use the Petzl SHUNT within the current “IRATA method”.

Extract from the June 2009 statement:
“Professional operatives who choose to use the Petzl Shunt as a rope-access and work-positioning back-up device must have received and mastered IRATA training or similar, and must use the Petzl Shunt with IRATA method. Responsibility for this remains with the employer and the user.”

Rope Access Inspection of Fan Anchor Bolts Lane Cove Tunnel – Transfield Services, Sydney

RIGCOM Access were contacted by Transfield Services to help provide them with a solution to their access needs. They needed a solution to help provide safe access for their employees to the top of fans to carry out inspections. After looking at a couple of Height Safety possibilities, RIGCOM Access suggested that the client look at using Rope Access methods to carry out the inspections. Rope Access Fan Inspection
